I have been neglecting my blog. Oops. So I have a lot to write about…
Last week Sunday, Jessica and I traveled to Oxford for the day. It was so fun! We got double-decker bus passes that we could use to hop on and off the bus all day to take us to different parts of town. When we first got on the bus, the first exciting thing I saw was the business school building. It wasn’t quite as cool as Tippie, but it was still pretty impressive.
We got off in several parts of town to walk around and see the buildings. The architecture and the nature were my favorite parts. There were lots of interesting buildings, like in London, expect that there were also parks, and grass, and trees – all things that I miss a lot in London. There isn’t a central part of campus or anything; there are just University buildings throughout the town. It was perfect weather and a very relaxing day trip. Success.
This week at work some exciting things happened. I helped create a press release for a new product, and then looked up editors of popular U.K. fashion/beauty magazines. I sent all the editors a copy of the press release, as well as a sample of the product. The exciting part is that InStyle magazine published an article based on the press release I sent the editor. I then received a personal thank you e-mail from the editor with a link to the article online. Very exciting for me.
L’Oreal offers its employees one day paid leave to volunteer and help out the community. At work on Thursday, it was “Citizenship Day.” There were booths set up in the dining area with different organizations promoting their causes. There were also booths set up that had all different kinds of food. Fish and chips, lasagna, pasta, burritos, sausages, mashed potatoes, fruit, ice cream - you name it, there was a booth for it. On top of the delicious food, there was also a sale of L’Oreal products that were priced super cheap and all the proceeds went to the various organizations that were at L’Oreal that day. At the end of the day, we popped a bottle of champagne at work to celebrate one of the employees in the PR department’s last day. I couldn’t believe everyone was just casually drinking champagne during the day at work. The business culture is soooooo different here. I still can’t get used to it.
On Thursday night, I was determined to try and find tickets to the Mumford & Sons and Arcade Fire concert. Definitely failed. It still makes me sad that I didn’t get to go, however, I at least heard Arcade Fire playing Keep the Car Running so that was enjoyable. I missed The Killers, Rod Stewart, Bon Jovi, Mumford & Sons, and Arcade Fire – all concerts that I would have loved to go to, but somehow I have not made it to one. I WILL make it to a concert before I leave this city. Everyone wants to go see the Black Eyes Peas next week which INFURIATES me. Nobody would go see The Killers or Bon Jovi, but they will go watch Fergie sing horribly and maybe a dance a little bit while a DJ plays some annoying beat in the background. There is only one person here I’ve found that has the same taste in music as me so the next opportunity we have we are going to a concert. I don’t care who it is, as long as they actually can play an instrument and put on an entertaining show (a.k.a. not The Black Eyed Peas).
On Friday, we went to the Science Museum. I learned about space, motors, and technology. It was really interesting. Jessica and I went to a 3-D IMAX movie about the ocean too. Of course I was that girl that screamed when the shark came out of nowhere and tried to bite my face. Everyone stared. Just another typical embarrassing Sarah moment…
Yesterday Jessica and I went to Wimbledon. It was the day before the finals and we thought there was no way that we would be able to get grounds tickets, but we did! Our friends got in line last Saturday at 4 a.m. and cued for 4 hours to get a ticket and they were number 8,108. Only 8,000 tickets are issued every day. We could not believe how lucky we were! We watched a doubles match of men who were in wheelchairs first. It was amazing to see them play. After that we watched some American men beat some foreign men. Go U.S.A. We couldn’t get into any of the big matches; tickets were about 100 pounds too, so we decided against that idea. We watched Sharapova play Kvitova on a big screen while sitting on a huge hill with a million other people on the grounds. It was really fun! Sharapova’s screams were a little annoying though…
Jordyn Searcy came to London this weekend so I had dinner with her and then we went out Saturday night. It was really fun and I don’t think I got home until about 6 a.m. Not kidding. People stay out LATE here. When I finally woke up at about 3 p.m. today, I went with some girls to the Burberry outlet. After walking around for about 30 seconds I realized there was no way I would be able to afford anything in the store, so I sat outside instead of teasing myself.
Now I just finished my homework that is due tomorrow, and I will probably go to bed early because I have to work tomorrow. You don’t get off work on the 4th of July in England… I actually think it is really ironic that I’m celebrating the 4th of July here – should be interesting! There’s a club that’s having an America party for all the Americans in London tomorrow night. I can’t wait. All I want to do is celebrate America and how much I love it.
Well I think that’s about it. I forgot a lot of what’s happened the past week or so – I will never wait this long to update my blog again!
