Hold on to your seatbelts.
These are the first 5 words in the latest version of Lonely Planet. And they're right on the money.
The plane touched down @ Tan Son Nhat airport a little after 4:00pm. Jerry found me a cheap deal aboard a Turkish Airways flight that was on its way home. Less than 30 travellers boarded the plane which meant that we had a couple of rows each. And an abundance of flight crew too.
We cleared Immigration rather briskly and made our way to the exit. That's when the word 'busy' comes to mind. Never have I seen and heard so many people at once. Vietnam was alive. I jumped into a car and headed to my motel - the Northern - in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. We must have travelled at least 500 metres before we were swamped by motor bikes. And I mean motor bikes. The driver told me that there was a motor bike for every 2nd person in town. I believe him too. She was a warmish day but I couldn't help but wind my window down to listen to the sound of the city of Saigon.
This morning I shared a boat ride along the river. It's a bustling 'bee-hive of activity'. The new blends with the old so effortlessly. And compliment each other too. This afternoon was spent in and around town's busiest markets - and roundabout. I've spared you the photos of a hundred same-same t-shirt shops. But I've recorded a couple of minutes of the afternoon traffic for your enjoyment.
The next time you're stuck in peak hour on the M5 in Sydney or tackling the roundabout at Dequetteville Terrace in Adelaide... think of this video and add a little smile to your day!
