Day Three
This is my 6th or 7th trip to Bangkok in 10 years. I've done most of the tourist things - the Royal Palace tour, the Chao Praya River tours, Kanchanaburi and the bridge over the River Kwai, Lumpini kick boxing, zoos, tuk-tuk racing, night bazaars and cycle tours to floating markets. But I'll be damned if I can find any of the photos.
Today I walked down Silom Road to the river and caught the public ferry to the Royal Palace. I managed to fire off about 60 frames (alright… more like 90 but I've deleted the bulk of the s***e) to capture the obvious bits. The ferry wharf next to the Royal Palace has about 60 food stands catering predominantly for the locals. It's a vibrant mix of colour and character. Dodgy touts litter the streets offering anything from the world's most expensive speedboat tours to the world's finest genuine fake gems. You can pay double the going rate for just about everything. And it's all done with the friendly smile that keeps us coming back.
I've added some of my (not so) handy-work to the photo library. Check out the friendly looking 4-foot and 5-foot lizards that inhabit the lakes at Lumpini. The first one was standing less than a foot away before I noticed. I'm fairly confident that the local Thais understand the 'f' word because they couldn't stop laughing at me when I dropped it. There are some nice photos of the local food stalls too.
I'm catching up with Dave for dinner tomorrow night. He's turned his hand from music management in Sydney to travel operator in Vietnam and now to real estate in Bangkok. We haven't seen each other for about 3 years. I'm looking forward to hearing how he's been.
