India and Nepal 2022
Ronscevalles to Zubiri Buenos Dias. I am in Navarra province and there is another long day ahead. Most peregrinos have set off early before sunlight but I wait until 8am to hit the road. There's a chill in the mountain air and once again it is very quiet and tranquil in this part of Spain. The first stop is to get a photo next to the road sign for Santiago de Compostela - it tells me that there is 790km to go which puts yesterday's achievement into perspective! Initially all you can hear is the sound of your own footsteps and the occasional cow bell in the meadows. And then gradually more and more day trekkers and cyclists appear on the scene because today is Saturday and these are popular weekend hobbies. The path is always well signposted with a yellow scallop shell symbol and gradually we tick off the kilometres, passing through small towns. It feels a bit of a hard slog today with aching shoulders and thighs but after stops for water and rest, we break today's 15 mile walk into manageable chunks. The last downhill section into Zubiri is fun. I am walking with Alesia from Brisbane and surprise her by playing Kylie Minogue through my iPad as we navigate through the tricky rocky final few hundred metres.
