India and Nepal 2022
Oliveira de Azemeis to Grijo Some days really test you physically and mentally and today has been one such day. Over 95% of the terrain in the 8 hour walk has been on asphalt, through fairly uninspiring towns, suburbs, light industrial areas. In the morning there was also heavy drizzly rain to contend with. Mentally, you have to break down the day into three or four chunks with cafe stops to have a coffee and piece of cake to keep you going for a couple of hours. You have to dig deep at times and realise that tomorrow will be a short 15 kms walk into the wonderful city of Porto. Physically, my feet were painful at the 25 kms mark but I learned a technique last year of getting my brain to transfer the focus of pain from my sore right ankle to my blistered toe on my left foot and then vice versa. Last night we enjoyed some great banter and a lovely meal of chicken, chips and salad at a local cafe with the company owner. She was a Brazilian born woman who had learned English as an exchange student 20 years ago. She asked where we were headed and when we said 'Santiago' we thought she might comment on our fortitude and endeavour. Instead she exclaimed, " You are all crazy, completely nuts"!!! After today, maybe just maybe she has a point!
