Vilafranca de Xira to Azambuja
When Queen Isabel of Portugal walked the route from Lisbon to Santiago in the 13th century, there were no motorways with heavy traffic, sugar cane factories or industrial zones. Today's walk, if I'm honest, has been a bit of a slog!
Right next door to where we set out is the wonderful marble fronted market in the centre of town and traders are getting ready for the day ahead.
There are few pilgrims on this Camino - only 0.5% of those reaching Santiago start in Lisbon - but we bumped into a French couple and a Hungarian woman. The Frenchmans daughter is studying at Essex University in Colchester. What a small world!
This is is bull running country with many posters displayed of the various festivals taking place over the next couple of months.
Its still very hot today and we call it a 'three litre of water day'. I even had to buy some sunscreen for an exorbitant price of €17.
Four over 30kms days to come, and so, an early night.
