India and Nepal 2022
If you have never been to Nepal, your image would probably be of mountaineers on snow clad Himalayan peaks or trekkers on valleys or mountain passes. Here in central Nepal, in what is the now the 'pre monsoon' season, the picture is somewhat different. Yesterday, according to Shankar, was a staggering 42 degrees Celsius and it zaps your energy. By 7.30 last night, I was in a deep sleep and had to be woken for my evening meal. Today is equally hot. I spent the morning with four different primary classes and did a bit of teaching of maths, grammar and song. When put on this spot by one class to teach them an a English song, I was so grateful that I could just about remember the words to 'heads, shoulders, knees and toes'! After school finished, I went with Prakash to a religious celebration gathering nearby where there was singing and dancing to Nepali music. We then met up with Baburam, another teacher at the school who wanted to join us for a trip up into the forest area. So two motorbikes with me switching between the two went up into the place where the village ends and the woods and mountain area begins. On the way down, we stopped for Nepali beer and enjoyed each other's company finding a common sense of humour. I often say to Jon, Alex and Livy that sometimes 'life is a roller coaster and you just got to ride it' and the trip down back to my home was exactly that. As twilight turned to darkness, I took the ride home with no crash helmet down bumpy and then potholed roads with the bright lights of oncoming motorbikes and children and adults making their way home in the dark. It was just so exhilarating and liberating to feel the wind against my face and to just go with the flow until I arrived safely back at my home.
