India and Nepal 2022
I have had one of those days which just warm your heart. Two and half hours further west into Nepal, I travelled on the school bus with the deaf children from the school and their teachers Today is sports day for the deaf and blind children in the whole district of Nawalparasi and the bus is full to overflowing. As we approach the venue, the area becomes even more rural with people living off the land with their animals in houses made of mud and leaves. I am soon accorded 'special guest status' and get to meet the Headteacher and the District Officer for Education, who has 700 schools as part of his responsibility. There are running races including for the blind (with a helper and tie), shot putt and other activities. At presentation time, I am asked to apply pink powder to the faces of the winners and runners up. To enter into the spirit of the day, the District Officer applies the holi festival powder to me too! It's been a long and tiring day but a very enjoyable one.
