India and Nepal 2022
I had a shock when I went to the outside toilet this morning and saw a mongoose looking at me. They kill the snakes apparently so that's alright then! Sometimes I have to pinch myself to remind me where I am! I walked up to the school and watched the assembly on the school field where they do physical exercises and sing the national anthem. I visited the deaf unit which has 34 students and the children are boarders as they come different parts of this rural area. A new unit is being built soon with the financial support of the Pahar Trust and assistance by the Nepal Schools Trust. I also visited each class in the main school and was given a rousing welcome. I spent several minutes in each classroom talking with the students asking questions and them asking questions of me. The class sizes are astonishing ranging from 35 to 60 which makes education for these youngsters a challenging process. Prakash, one of the young teachers took me during the late afternoon on the back of his motorbike right to the top of the hill in the village and I met some wonderful local characters. As the sun sets over the inner Terai, I know that I am achieving a long held ambition of immersing myself into the culture of a local remote village here in Nepal.
