India and Nepal 2022
Its Sunday afternoon and following my weekly meditation session, I decide to visit another Yangon pagoda. My friends are all pagoda'd out so I travel by myself.
Firstly, a very helpful police officer puts me on the correct bus, as the Yangon bus system has changed this week, reducing the number of routes from 300 to 60.
The Botataung pagoda is an important site on the waterfront near the ferry piers and industrial wharves. The story is that two strands of hair from Buddha are contained within a special part of the pagoda's interior, brought here over two thousand years ago by his Myanmar followers.
Much of the pagoda complex was badly damaged by RAF bombing in 1943 and it has been restored to its former glory since that time. I buy a foreigner ticket, have my photo taken, remove my shoes and enter the area.
The official name of this place is The Buddha's First Sacred Hair Pagoda - or Botataung.
In addition to the hair and other relics, an important feature is the Nan Oo Royal Palace Bronze Image which was taken from Mandalay by the British in 1851 when they annexed Upper Myanmar. It was kept as an exhibit at the Royal and Albert Museum in London until its return to Yangon in 1951.
This area is a popular place for local people and they can buy their fake football shirts for as little as £1.50. There are adult sizes and replica kits for the children. Without any doubt, the favourite team out here is Manchester United and everyone knows about Wayne Rooney.
