India and Nepal 2022
I like going to visit my local pagoda in Kwaik Wine Pagoda road. I feel at home here and I look in on the trustees in their office. This time I am with my VSO friend Chris and they make us very welcome with tea and coffee.
I hear the word 'Englishman' on a phone call which one of the trustees is making and half an hour later, as we are walking around the complex, the familiar face of another trustee greets us with a firm handshake and welcome.
We have another tea and coffee and then boiled rice with a packet of dry fried small fish. But better is to follow as they open the safe in the office and take out a box of gold leaf.We are given a privileged viewing of the renovation of one of the pagodas in a locked inner zone.
First the workmen rub down and lacqueur the pagoda and the apply the golf leaf which is 99% pure gold. It is fascinating to watch the pagoda being restored for a few more years.
The.amount of gold which is a feature of many pagodas is truly staggering and much of the money is raised through private donation.
There is a major festival and holiday this weekend called Thadingyut. I think I'll spend the evening here with the local people from my neighbourhood.

Jayne Hi Rich At last been able to catch up with your blog. You have been through the mill and out the other side!! The experiences are amazing and pleased you survived the falling in the drain without any injury, but can only imagine the smell. There seems to be a lot of pagodas and temples, like Japan, which are fascinating and religion makes such a different way of life. Pleased you've made lots of friends now from all over the world, the only thing you don't mention is what you are eating? Are you able to cook or do you just eat out? Hope the rain has stopped for you. Love Phil & Jayne
