India and Nepal 2022
Yangon is changing quite fast and opening up to outside influences. The new government was installed in March this year although Myanmar has been seeking to change its way of functioning for the past six or seven years.
Walking into the downtown area, there are still relatively few western 'foreigners' to be seen at this time of year and so I am welcomed by people who want to know a bit about where I come from and for them to express their optimism about the future of their country.
I stopped and chatted to a bookseller who stressed the importance of the English language for young Myanmar students. The cinemas seemed to be popular - Star Trek was showing at one. I can just imagine what this downtown area might look like in a few years with McDonalds, Starbucks, expensive hotels etc and I am so grateful to be here now.
A small demonstration of factory workers was taking place near Sule pagoda and a police line in place to prevent access to a particular road. There was little tension in the air and people went about their business as normal. In fact, Yangon feels a very safe city and the people are respectful and friendly.
One final funny moment at lunchtime was when I ordered 'chicken with pineapple' but think I got 'pineapple with chicken' as you will see from the attached photo!
