India and Nepal 2022
Within a week, my colleagues at Akhaya Women have put together a conference to draw attention to a survivor of an acid attack. It's been good to be part of the planning for the event and to see it come together this afternoon. The energy and teamwork is something to behold.
250 people attended the event which was a great success with several TV companies and newspapers covering the story. My organisation provides services for women who are subjected to sexual violence as well as for advocating on issues which affect women here in Myanmar.
Despite the distressing theme of the event, the tone was upbeat and a real display of community support and fundraising for the young woman who was subject of the attack. It ended with a rousing song and dance to the signature tune from the One Billion Rising campaign.
I am supporting Akhaya through strengthening its capacity as it moves from a very small civil society organisation in a part of Yangon into a movement with greater influence through the whole of the country.
I am learning a lot about issues which affect women all over the world as well as the work of international development agencies in developing countries. As a man, working with a women's group, it gives me a rare insight into how gender equality is seen from a different perspective.
