Nat's Adventures
Had to take a few days break from the computers because of power cuts and crashing, losing all my journal entry!! Like Sarah says a threw a mini tantrum, but a cigarette soon helped.
Setting up home here in McLeod Ganj for 4/5 weeks, the bus/train travel is taking alot out of us. Got a 9hr overnight local bus from Shimla, not reccommended, not even for your worst enemy! Roads were bumpy and winding up n round the mountain. There is no chance of sleeping on this bus, not even my Dad could fall asleep on this thing! There was no armrests to grip to so we linked arms to stop each other falling. Arrived miraculously in one piece at 5am. There was no sign of life in town except the occasional cow, we decided to hang with the cow at the ATM for an hour or so before hotels opened up. The Dalai Lama is hosting a big teaching thing for the Taiwans this week so accommadation scarce. We had to wait around until after midday to get a bed. By this time Sarah had had 2 breakfasts and a big pot of tea. I fell asleep in the hotel cafe/reception only to wake and find Sarah gone. She got a row when i found her for letting me sleep like that, she says people were staring and poking at me - so she left?!?
We've both found some volunteer work, Sarah's teaching french and i'm working with the Tong-Len charity in thye health clinic. It's down in a settlement every Tueday morning. On my first day there we seen 45 patients in 3 hours! Nearly as exhausting a a 12hr shift and certainly just as warm as an RIE ward! Working with another nurse and a doctor, we seen everything there. Epilepsy, breat Ca, dermatitis, boils, scabies the list goes on. The charity are currently campaining for a wee 5yr old girl with Atrial septal defect who needs 150,000 rupees (2000 GBP) for her operation. Have a look on the Tong-Len.org website to pull on those heart strings a little more. Its great to see what they are achieving for these people, although heartbreaking at times i imagine.
We attempted to be enlightened by the buddisism philosophy but did'nt take a radio for translation so will attempt this again soon. However we did make it to spicy Indian cooking classes, but it freaked me out when he started talking about dangerous bugs hiding in the aubergines, a lovely Dal and korma we can now cook.
Kirsten/John a wee question for you, do all cows have udders? And when a cow has horns does that mean it is a bull? I got attacked by a horned cow the other night, scary, no long term damage - not physically anyway.
Take care X
