Wednesday - sunny - overcast
After a shortish sleep, we got our usual wake up with warm water at our door to wash our faces. Then we packed up our gear ready to leave after breaky.
I had for breakfast a tomato and Nak cheese sandwich. A Nak is a female Wak, and the cheese is bloody terrific, probably one of the nicest I have ever had. Even gives cheese world down in Victoria a run. Have to try and get some back in town. We then fixed up our meal tab and hit the trail.
It was a brilliant morning in Namche, the sky had cleared up to reveal the huge mountains that we had come to see. Just awesome, they are so high, the snowy tops are so bright.
It was short lived though, once at the top of one massive hill, which took one hour to climb. The clouds smashed us and blanketed everything. They covered the perfect view of Namche and the towering mountains.
It was a real shame too, because if it was still clear we would of seen Everest once over the other side on the hill.
The clouds stuck with us for the rest of the day too. It was a easy walk after the big hill, we walked across the top of the mountain, were the scenery changes so much. Then down the other side to a farming village called Khumjung. Khumjung is 3790m high were getting higher, and it farms mainly potatoes and beats. Nice quite town, very original, hadn't been changed much for tourism. Only has half a dozen or so lodges, and zero shops. The locals depend more on their produce as a source of income.
After lunch we went too our rooms and relaxed for awhile. Then we went for a walk to a monastery, to see a yeti scalp, and to do more prayer wheel turning for good weather. Then we had a walk to the far end of town to a hospital, interesting place. It was more of a G.P than hospital. it's only setup for minor surgery. That means that if something bad happened to a local, and because they can not afford the $5000 heli ride to Kathmandu. They have to get carried the 6-8 trek back to Lukla and then plane it to Kathmandu. Also it isn't funded by the government, its funded by tourist donations and sir Ed hillary funds. It gets volunteer doctors too.
We then walked to the other side of town to see the local high school and the sir Ed statue. It was a public holiday so the school wasn't running, great mountain backdrop for the kids though.
We walked back to the hotel after the school and had free time before dinner. Kim and I just hung in our room, but then the sky started to clear up again. Revealing enormous mountains. I wish it was clear the hole time, I wouldn't stop taking photos though.
Warm stew for dinner again then tried to get an early night. Big 6-8 hr trek tomorrow.
