On Friday we took a tour of Napier via an amphibious bus, kindly donated to us by Graham and Jo's neighbour. The tour would take us around the city of Napier and educate us about the devastating Earthquake that hit in 1931. It registered 7.8 on the richter scale, which is higher than the quake that almost destroyed Christchurch. The quake was so powerful it shifted acres of land from under the sea to form new land to build on and created a new shore line, along with this it killed 246 people and damaged a vast amount of the buildings in the area, the local council decided they need to rebuild the city and built over 150 buildings in two years, all in the design of Art Deco which means Napier is now the Art Deco Capital of the world. The tour proceeded around the city to the old port where it went into the water and boated around to the new port to give us a tour of this part of the city. On the way back to the start the bus went back into the water to go around the marina before dropping us off.
On Saturday we headed back to Napier to join in with a Diwali Festival they were putting on. Performing at an outdoor auditorium were Hindu dancing acts from around New Zealand who put on a show for almost 400 people who had turned out to see the festivities. There were Bangra and Bollywood acts and a group called Garagewalas who mixed Bangra and hip hop and were really good (they came in the top 30 on NZ's got talent). To finish the evening off we grabbed some freshly made Pakoras with tamarind sauce and headed off home.
