On Sunday, we had one of the more fulfilling days with the kids yet. No lessons, just fun. I organised a card hunt, with three coloured teams - play got started about an hour late because of heavy rain! We had a pinyata (baloon breaking), some maasai jumping, some football, a nativity play and some mexican food. It was knackering, but worth it. I even ended up catching a taxi into town to watch Everton beat West Ham. So not the perfect day it could have been! However.... i fell ill Sunday night and spent Monday at the compound, being sick.
On Tuesday of this week I was diagnosed as having contracted malaria. I spent two days and one night in a local 'private' hospital receiving good care and attention. Most people will know this by now. Suffice to say that i am fine now, am on about 6 different types of medication and have booked myself into a hotel room for 3 nights.
This morning, whilst walking from the hotel, i was randomly stopped by immigration. When a burly guy calls out from a 4x4 you usually ignore it - so i did. when a different guy from the same vehicle steps out and grabs my arm, you think you are going to mugged or conned or driven away to a dark alley. Having felt very suspicious, i was eventually persuaded that they were from immigration, although it was all very strange. Luckily the passport they wanted to see was back at the hotel, 5 minutes away, so a quick visit and a couple calls later and 'my purpose in Tanzania' was clarified. I was free to go.
Today, we saw just about the heaviest rains yet - just when you thought it couldn't rain much more it did - rivers burst their banks, roads were flooded, and people were literally washed away. I was in town, with 6 more of the kids having pizza, following the latest round of HIV Tests - i can report thankfully that so far they have ALL BEEN NEGATIVE and am confident the rest will be. We spent the afternoon perched on a balcony back at the hotel.
My mind has been racing with so much and still can't sleep well. My thoughts are with Mum today also, because of the funerl. But i have rested as well as helped the kids today, so it has been a worthwhile day, despite the deluge of water! BRING ON THE DRY SEASON!!!!!!
