Well, another week here in Buswelu/Mwanza. And its been very wet. Has rained at least once every day, sometimes very heavy, making the roads muddy and Hisani waterlogged. An indoor classroom is being built, but for now we are having to teach in what is basically a building site - dirt, dust, rubble, nails sticking out of walls. Ofsted would never let this happen! I have been teaching standard two this week. The most fun we had was playing Snakes And Ladders, for which I made the board, counters and die. I have also been teaching standard one, which mostly consists of hearing 'teacher phili', 'teacher phili' for an hour. Some mornings I have had the lovely Standard Zero - the young ones - for which I came up with a variation on 'Old McDonald Had A Farm'. A song entitled 'Young Mlokozi's on Safari.... E-I-E-I-O' etc. Have also been working on a timetable (what the kids are supposed to do each day) with Georgina to put on Hisani's walls.
I visited the kids' school the other day - Gedelli Primary - and met with a couple of the teachers - i have agreed, with Tom, to take a class of Standard Six (roughly 12-13 year olds). There will approximately 100 kids in the class, so i better make it good or i will die. No idea what to teach them yet but hopefully will come up with something today. Before that, we are going to a local beach - not for our amusement but to check it out as a place to take the kids out next weekend. I may try to create an orienteering exercise (that PGL Adventure Holiday again!)
Tomorrow, Simon, the head of VA, visits, so that should be useful.
I have given out most of my stickers now - the ones Connor gave me have gone down very well at Hisani - but i could do with lots more. If anyone can spare the time and wants to donate a small gift then i could really do with some more stickers - animals, footballers, pin-ups, anything). Liverpool, Chelsea, Man Utd... i'm afriad i asked the kids at Gedelli School if they knew about Norwich City FC, and despite their uniforms being Yellow and Green, they all looked blank!
I have lost my mobile phone - not the one i bought here - 07577835342 - but my Motorola V3 with 'wish you were here' ringtone. Went to look for it the other day and it has gone, no idea what happened to it. will have to sort out when i return to UK.
Anyway, still healthy and gently adapting to life here, although there are a few home comforts i am missing. Won't ever adapt the way some volunteers have, but doing better than others! Sawa (OK). Hope you got the postcards... if not then maybe next week.
Afia (cheers)! Take Care You All
Love Phil
