Up extremely early today as we went up to the summit of Haleakala volcano to watch the sunrise. We got up at 3am, leaving the hostel at half past and making the 1 hours drive to the volcano before making the 10,000ft climb (in the car!!) to the top of it! We'd been told sunrise was at 0530 so timing would have been perfect but found it sunrise was actually at 0649, so a little on the early side!! Being up 10,000ft at night was so cold, we had wrapped up warm, lots of layers but were still freezing, hands and feet going numb!
We were right up above all of the clouds so we could see every star in the sky - we have never seen so many stars, not even at Ayers Rock! It was beautiful and so bright, the sky was entirely covered in stars.
We cuddled up in the Mustang to keep warm until 6am when we went out to watch the beginning of the sunrise. The sky slowly developed an orange glow on the horizon, changing the blues above it - all the colours were so beautiful and we watched for 50 mins as they constantly changed.
When the sun first appeared all we could see was a tiny slither, a line on the top of the clouds. All of the clouds started glowing and we watched the sun appear. It was amazing seeing all of the colours change - even the rock of the volcano. It was the perfect place to watch, above the clouds, 10,000ft high in the sky.
Once the sun was fully up and awake and we had blasted the car heaters to get the feeling back in our hands, we made our decent and drove on to the Hana Highway.
We drove the entire 39miles from central Maui through to the village of Hana. The Hana Highway is a cliff hugger as it winds its way deep into lush valleys and back out above the coastline, snaking around more than 600 twists and turns along the way!! There are lots of one lane bridges too, quite scary!
We got some fantastic views and stopped to do one walk through the rainforest. There were a couple of amazing waterfalls amongst the valleys and once in Hana we saw their black sand beach! There wasn't alot else in Hana so we turned around and came back - feeling quite travel sick by the end of it!!
We came back to the hostel where we collapsed on the bed for a nap, we are so tired and have to get up for an early flight back to Honolulu where we then fly onto Los Angeles tomorrow!! After dinner we went for a drive around the isalnd, we have to return our hire car with an empty tank as we pre paid for fuel, with a quater of a tank left we decided to spend the evning driving around Maui in our beautiful Mustang, have to make the most of it before we have to give it back tomorrow!! boo.
