The Alamo is just across the street from my hotel. Of course I had to read the history before going in. I did know that all were killed in the battle and that it became a rallying cry for Texas to break free from Mexico. I did not know that there were women and children in one part of the building while the battle raged on. After the battle one of the women was sent with her young child to let it be known that all were killed. I walked in the room where they were. I can't imagine what that was like for those women protecting their children and knowing that their husbands would most likely be killed. The grounds of the Alamo are park like today and shaded with very old trees many of them oaks. Today it is calm, peaceful and cool with no sign of the violence that occurred so long ago. One thing I have yet to find out is that they sent runners for help and only the town of Gonzales sent help. The Texans were surrounded by thousands of Mexican soliders with less than 200 inside the Alamo. Why did no one else help?
