Last night we checked into our lodge about 20m from the airstrip in Lukla. And guess what? You know how they say it's a small world? Well at our lodge last night we met a lady who lived in Kenya two doors down from Bhavni. Can you believe it? And i found out they live just down the road from us in Stanmore. They know Bhavni, her parents and the whole family.
Anyways back to the main event...we got some good news. Although our flight was delayed slightly we managed to get a flight out from Lukla this morning before the clouds rolled in. So no being stranded for days in Lukla which is all too common.
We hopped on our little Yeti airlines prop plane and it started to accelerate down the downhill runway. And just before the runway ended and the mountain fell away and we made lift off. There were more than a few held breath's and fingers crossed let me tell you.
You know, the trek has been an amazing journey but I was glad to be going back to a more normal altitude and some much needed heat.
Reflecting on the past two weeks I guess I'd have to say that it hasn't been a 'fun' holiday but it has been a rewarding one. The trip pushed me to my limits physically and along the way I saw scenery that was simply stunning and something you won't see unless you are in high altitude in the Himalayas. I have a new respect for mountaineers and what they can accomplish and even more respect for the local Sherpa people who support them.
I have had a chance to get to know how kind, humble and honest the Sherpa people are which is probably the best thing I have experienced during this trip.
I have been lucky enough to get to know my trekking parter Owen Li who is a great guy and a great new good friend.
I think what made this experience so unique is that it is just that, so unique. It is so different from the usual beach or city centre holidays that I normally take. Would I do it again? Good question. I think at this point I'll only say, maybe. Maybe, because it's so fresh in my mind and I would love to get some heat in me and relax on a beach somewhere tropical. But if I ever wanted a real experience or a true challenge I just may give it another go.
Mount Fuji anyone?
All the best,
Mike Bajwa
