Today we woke up in Pangboche and were going to do a day trek to Amadablam Base Camp. Our Sherpa told us it was going to be a difficult climb because of about 3-hours of steep uphill, and the cold and windy weather. I felt strong and healthy so I was as prepared as I could be.
We started the hike with the weather sunny but cold. We soon built up a good sweat climbing but then we reached a certain point and it got super windy and super cold. We donned our toques and wind proof outer layers and kept pushing up the mountain. I gotta say the equipment and gear we have really works great at keeping out the elements. Lets hope it stays that way! Once warm and ready it was just up and up, higher and higher and it was really tough. I just kept thinking how important it was that I made it to the top to allow my body acclimatise and to get my body ready for the tougher climbs ahead. Well we finally made it! My legs were like jelly, I was cold and out of breath but 4500m achieved!!
We then headed back down to the same lodge in Pangboche and we were both pretty tired. It was a good day of climbing high and sleeping low which should help us acclimatise.
Our lodge has no heat and is bloody cold. Ok we have hot showers but trust me when I say that it's not fun standing in the bathroom naked when it's about 5C. I think today is the last day I am going to shower as this is the last of the "luxury lodges" and from here on in we will only get a bucket of hot water and the ambient temperature will be around 0C. So I would rather smell than go through the torture of attempting to bathe!
Tomorrow we are heading to Dingboche which has us climbing to 4400m. It's off to bed early. Goodnight all!
