After going to Everest Base Camp then staying at nearby Gorak Shep, we tried to summit Kala Patar in the morning but didn't make the attempt as there was no point as it was cloudy and snowing so we wouldn't get a good view from the summit.
Instead from Gorak Shep we started our descent down and stopped again at Lobuche. There we got talking with the Sherpa owner who goes to Vancouver every year as his kids are going to school in West Van! What are the chances eh? Both of his kids live there with his wife and he lives way up here in the mountains and goes every summer to see them. Oh and this guy isn't just a lodge owner he has led 4 summits to Everest. Now that's what I call walking the walk and talking the talk! Go Mr. Mountain Man!
On another note I forgot to mention that I haven't been able to sleep for the past 3 nights. It has something to do with the lack of oxygen at this altitude but I was basically suffocating at night. I'd wake up not breathing then realise I'm not breathing (which is not good!) then consciously take 3-4 deep breaths to catch my breath then try to go to sleep. Then it would happen again. It's as if your body has forgotten how to breathe so it just stops. Very strange indeed.
Anyways the next morning we set off for Pangbouche. It was so much more enjoyable heading down in altitude than going up. I mean there are still hills to climb but 80% of the time is downhill rather than what I've been used to which was 80% uphill!
You can really enjoy the scenery and 'smell the roses' so to speak rather than fighting just to take another step.
We stopped in Dinboche for lunch, and headed down to our final destination for the day Pangbouche.
Ladies and gentlemen this was our first opportunity to take a shower in 4 or 5 days. Let me tell you I stunk like a Yak and almost had flies circling me. Yes, it felt amazing to get clean. Ok so we are still far from civilisation but I'll take this as the first sign of better things to come!
Next stop Namche Bazaar.
