We have arrived in Australia safe and well. Here is a recap of what we have been up to..............
Our last day in Singapore was quite relaxing. We had to check out of the hostel at 12pm so had plenty of time to pack have breakies and get ready. We treated ourselves in the afternoon to a wonderful Thai meal (which we had been looking forward to all week)as we had been very good throughout the week and budgeted. We then when to meet dans friend Sam but never found him so we headed back to the hostel in the rain had a little snooze and then got the very busy MRT to the airport ready for our flight to Cairns at 10.15pm
After checking in we realised our flight stopped in Darwin. The flight to Darwin was about 4 hours and the flight was empty so we had lots of space to stretch out and relax. After landing in Darwin and then returning our journey onto Cairns we met a man who will always make us laugh everytime we think about him. Before boarding the flight we both noticed him as the only luggage he had was a huge bright green blanket. Boarding the plane we saw him sitting by the window seat in the distance. It wasnt long before we realised he was our company for the remaining 3 hour flight!!We sat down said that he wanted to `share the kiwi love` before we could say anything we were rapped up in his green blanket!!As you can imagine the 3 of us all snuggled up looking like one of the tellytubbies!!He was a very funny and laidback NewZealander who hadnt slept for days after going to a wedding and was still abit drunk but never the less great entertainment as we didnt have any tv's on the plane!!His speach was very difficult to understand (mixture of drink and no sleep)but his kindness kept us warm for the flight.(Leanne was worried everytime his hands went under the cover if the 'wandering hand'was coming her way!!Megan on the other hand was trying to sleep and was unaware about what was/wasnt going on under the covers as she didnt no whether she was going to be sick or her ears were about to explode from the pressure). Arriving in Cairns knackard, hungry and smelly we said good bye to our first Kiwi friend and thanked him for the cover we borrowed (didnt like to think where the blanket had been previously to the flight but heyho!!)we called the hostel (sunday 24th) because they have free pickup from the airport and arrived at the hostel about 9am. We couldnt check in until 1pm and the Hostel also does a pickup and drop off into the nearest town on the hour so we dropped our heavy backpacks off and went in a daze to find something for breakfast(toast and chips!!). The hostel is very nice we are staying a 6 bed dorm and they are all men which is a huge contrast to our Singapore home where we had a room to ourselves. The hostel is great value for money. Under ten pounds a night ($18) with the private bus service into town and free breakfast. After getting settled and waving to our new room mates we headed to the washing machine where Leanne did her very 1st load of washing!(it was a moment in history and time stood still!!) After completing the washing(and Leanne getting a medal for it! a gold at that!) we went back to the room to find Leannes combination lock had stopped working!!So all of her belongings including purse and passport was locked inside her backpack. We tried and tried to unlock it using the numbers but no success. We appreciated this first task of the travelling, after 48 hours of no sleep!!So off we trecked, Leanne with her backpack on her back(i feel a song coming on!!)to reception to find a saw and hammer to break the lock! The DIY girls have arrived in Auzzie!!(no job 2 big or small! especially under a green blanket!!) So Leanne was hard at work sawing her way through the lock whilst Megan was checking the washing. After about 40 mins the lock was broken and Leanne had won her 2nd medal of the day (the plonker medal!)We then went back into town on the free bus still knackard and got a pizza for tea and was looking forward to our beds. Before our heads hitting the pillow Leanne hit her 3rd stoke of bad luck and lost her door key(medal number 3 going her way!Should of compeated in the Olympics!!)but we werent too bothered as we are staying at the hostel 12 nights so plenty of time to find it.
We had set the alarm for the morning (monday) so we could see what the hostel had the offer for breakfast. We got 2 pieces of toast, packet of Wheatabix, milk, jam and tea or coffee!BARGAIN! After a refreshing shower we bumped into our room mates again and then headed into town to buy a phone so our family and friends are only a phone call away. We looked around and Vodafone was the best deal but we needed our passports with us to buy it, which we didnt have (so we went back later) did abit of shopping, brought our food for the next 2 weeks, and went back to cook some pasta for tea and chilled out.
So that brings us to yesterday(tuesday)We missed breakfast(what a suprise)woke up at 12pm. One of our room mate Numo is a huge snoorer and so gave us some ear plugs so eachnight me and leanne lay there in our beds with bright yellow ear plugs in our ears! Its very funny. Sent some emails for jobs in hostels we might be staying in and hung out with our room mates and Lindsey who works in the hostel before going back to the room and going to bed about 1am. Andrea one of our room mates was packing to leave (he is like an italian Mr Bean) so we had a laugh watching and talking to him and Numo.
So today (wednesday) we headed into town to see a job lady in an internet place and looked at adverts for jobs. Its Lindseys birthday today and has invited us our for a meal. Megan is full of cold so is going to have an early night but watch this space to see what Leanne got upto!!
Australia is amazing. We have only been here a few days and the people are fab. The weather is hot enough to wear shorts and shirts and a cardi in the evening. A few spots of rain but cant complain. There are parrots flying about an the odd lizard on walls all around here. Its lovely. Lots of vegetarian places and we are meeting so many weird and wonderful people! This is what travelling is all about:D
Hope all is well back home
