Hello all! After a busy two weeks in the States, I landed back in London on 5 January to begin Term 2. Due to a delay on my flight out of Pittsburgh to Chicago that would have caused me to miss my connecting flight to Heathrow, United rebooked me to go through D.C. instead. Despite the fact that I then spent another hour waiting in Pittsburgh, I loved it because I got to fly from D.C. to London in business class. Ah, that is the life! So, my flight back was only about six hours and quite comfortable. Not bad for a student ticket! After recovering from my jetlag, I immediately had to finish my three essays that were due this past Wednesday and Thursday. Luckily I had the two biggest ones written before I left for break so I only had to proofread and edit them. I am quite proud of myself for having all three submitted on Tuesday afternoon. Hopefully I did well, especially on the longest one as it is the only mark I will have for that class. I should know in a few weeks.
Not much changed here while I was gone except that the bus fare went up at the beginning of the year. Term 2 officially began last week and I have classes again on Wednesday and Thursday. This term should be a little better than the first since I now have a bit of backgroud in Anthropology and a grasp on how the university operates. I knew for sure that I was back in Kilmorey Hall when we had two fire alarms in the past week. The second one was at 5:30 am Saturday morning. I got quite lucky because I had just returned about 20 minutes earlier from central London and had just gotten out of the shower. I went with three of my classmates for drinks and dancing to celebrate handing in our essays. If the night bus had taken even 5 minutes longer I would have still been in the shower when the alarm went off. (As Yiota said, there really is no safe time to shower!)
On Sunday I went back into London with Lindy. We ended up just shopping at two markets (Old Spitalfields Market and Petticoat Lane Market) in east London. We each bought a couple of things and just had a nice time walking around. Vendors were selling all kinds of great clothing and shoes along with suitcases and pots and pans. It was quite crowded and after several hours we started to get a bit cold so we decided to have a late lunch and then head back towards Uxbridge. It was a nice day away from campus and the usual scenery.
Today I was able to impress several of my flatmates with my great culinary skills by making Rice Krispy treats! I brought some marshmallows back with me from the States (I haven't seen just regular, plain marshmallows here) and Yiota helped me make them today. When I explained to Xia later how they were made, she was impressed that they are so much easier than apple pie! Perhaps we will have to have a Rice Krispie treat night like our apple pie night last term. It's such an amazing experience to be able to live with people from so many different cultures. I am learning so much from them and getting to try lots of new dishes.
Just as Term 1 was full of an enormous amount of reading so is Term 2. It is time for me to move on to the 144 page book my professor assigned for Thursday's class. Since the library does not have it, we had to order it. Luckily (and surprisingly) mine arrived today so I will at least be able to have most of it read for Thursday afternoon. I hope you all had a lovely holiday season and are ready for a postive and fun-filled 2007!
