Hello all! My apologies for not updating recently. Time is flying by and I didn't realize how long it had been. Nothing overly exciting has happened these past few weeks. I put in my first (and only so far) day of work in the UK on 2 May when I helped with Brunel's International Students Open Day. The weather was gorgeous and it turned out to be a really good day overall. My job was to meet the prospective students at Hillingdon tube station (one stop before Uxbridge) and direct them to the taxis waiting to drive them back to campus. This meant that I was also in a car for the first time since I left Pittsburgh in January! I met one group of students in the morning and then a second wave around noon. When I returned to campus the second time, all the student assistants joined the second group for lunch at the refectory. I had a nice chat with some of the prospective students and surprised myself with how much I actually know about Brunel. I enjoyed the day and would have volunteered to help even if it wasn't a paid position. It gave me a nice break from my normal routine and activities. Brunel International is planning another open day over the summer, so hopefully I will be able to work that day as well. The small amount of money I did make that day is already gone (even though I haven't officially been paid yet) after a Saturday shopping trip to Oxford Street!
Other than that, I have been continuing to do my dissertation research. The community group I am working with meets on Thursdays so I have been attending those meetings every week. I have also begun to do some interviews and am NOT enjoying transcribing them! I've been spending time in the library and am trying to keep myself motivated to continue with my reading. This is not the easiest thing to do considering my slacking nature! Several classmates and I have been meeting up at the campus cafe to take breaks and encourage each other to keep going. It's always nice to chat with people who are in the same situation.
This weekend I am taking an extended break from everything to go to Edinburgh, Scotland. I'm so excited! Julie is running her first marathon there on Sunday, and I'm so glad that I am able to be there to cheer her on. I know she is going to do great. And I've heard from loads of people that Edinburgh is a beautiful city so I'm looking forward to seeing it for myself. I will do my best to get my entry and photos posted for you next week!
