Hello, everyone! My apologies for not posting for a couple weeks. I have been busy with my "homework"--shocking, I know! I have two essays due this week that took a little longer than I anticipated. I am a little out of practice with the whole researching and writing thing. Plus everyone got really busy with their own essays and reading and exams, so nothing all that exciting was going on here. I do have a few things I can share with you, though.
I will be going to Belgium from November 10-13 for a long weekend! We are going to stay in the town of Brugge which is supposed to be beautiful and full of delicious Belgium chocolate. I am going with Yiota (my flatmate from Cyprus) and Lindy (from Seattle) who are also chocolate lovers. We have decided to fast the week before we leave so that while we are there we can stick to a strictly chocolate diet. I will definitely be taking lots of photos to share with you.
This past Saturday night I went into London with Lindy to a birthday party for one of her friends, Jess. Jess has been living and working in London for a couple years. She had her party at a retro bowling alley located in the basement of a hotel. Jess has several gay friends (she refers to them as her "gays") who were also at the party and had never been bowling before. Watching them attempt to bowl was one of the funniest things I have ever seen! There was also a Halloween party at the bowling alley that night so there were some pretty crazy costumes. One of our favorites was the guy dressed up like a sherrif from an old western movie and wearing a stuffed horse (so it looked like he was riding the horse). . .too funny! Plus we had a pimp (who we were later told was also gay) serve us our drinks. It was fun just to get dressed up (not costume dressed up, though) and have a fun night in London. I will have to get Lindy to send me some of the photos we took with her camera so I can post them, too.
Sadly the Fall weather is arriving in England as well. The high temperatures forcasted for this week are going to be in the upper 40's and low 50's, although with quite a bit of sunshine. Overall, I haven't found the weather to be that bad. I guess the western PA weather is more similar to the weather here than places like Cyprus which is much warmer. Poor Yiota is not going to enjoy the winter!
In some good news, I am actually starting to understand the readings for my modules more than the first few weeks. Whew! I was starting to get worried that my lack of anthropological knowledge was going to make this year even harder than it should be. Luckily I have found that many of my classmates are in similar situations. Hardly anyone has a background in anthropology and they are from all over the world. Discussions are always so interesting because everyone brings such different experiences and outlooks. Several classmates were thrilled to hear that I, a native English speaker, was as confused as them when doing the readings. I can't imagine studying at this level in a second (or third for some) language.
Now I suppose I should get back to my studying. I want to do a final proofreading of my essays before I print them and get ready to submit them tomorrow. Now that my one flatmate has stopped her annoying loud whining I should be able to concentrate. Happy Halloween!
P.S. I know I have only posted a few photos from Brunel's campus and there have been requests for some more. Until I get some of my own to post, you may want to check out this sight and see some nighttime shots: http://www.imreallylazy.co.uk/Galleries/BrunelByNight/
