After many glorious days of warmth and sun, the true English weather has now arrived: cold and rainy. But have no fear. Not even a bit of foul weather could keep the Brunel Graduate School from having their annual Postgraduate Party! All you need is to fill a tent with free food and beer and a live band and the students will come. Everyone was celebrating making it through another week of lectures. Since all of my lectures are on Wednesday and Thursday, Thursday evening brings a sense of relief. . .but also a bit of disappointment because the cycle of struggling through required readings begins again. Who knew that getting your masters would require actual studying. . .
Some other random thoughts/stories to share today:
*My flatmate Kate's grandmother sent her a package which contained, among other things, Uno cards. As many of you know, I am not a big fan of Uno but said I would help Kate teach some of the other girls how to play last night. Well, the teaching session turned into several heated and very long hands of Uno. Picture 7 women (2 from China, 1 from Taiwan, 1 from Cyprus, 1 from Thailand, and 2 from the US) sitting around the kitchen table sipping Chinese tea, munching on biscuits (cookies) and sweets (candy), shouting "what" and "why" in Chinese (because those are the only Chinese words all of us know), and desperately trying to be the Uno champ. OK, so maybe you had to be there, but we must have been a funny sight. The third hand finally ended around 11 and we had to call it quits so everyone could get prepared for Thursday's lectures and meetings.
*Julie rang me this week (called me on the phone) and we had a lovely chat! This is the longest we have been in the same timezone for years. We made plans for her and Tim to visit me on the 14th of October. I'm so excited to see them again. (And I'm not just saying that, Julie, because I know you take time out of your busy day of reading about war and sex to enjoy my brilliant journal entries!) It's nice that the bus from Oxford actually stops at the next town over from Uxbridge so it will be very easy for them to get here and for me to go there to see their new flat.
*Yesterday Yiota, Kate, Lindy, and I booked beds at a hostel in Dublin, Ireland for St. Patrick's Day weekend. It took us quite a bit of searching to find a place that had any availabilities, so it's a good thing we started planning now. In the next few days we will be booking our flight from London to Dublin. When I spent my first St. Patrick's Day in Dublin five years ago, I never thought I would ever have that experience again. I guess you never know what the future will bring.
*We are also planning a long weekend trip somewhere else in Europe for November. We are just going to see where we can go the cheapest (Ryan Air offers some flights for just a few pounds or even less than a pound!) and go there. Right now we are thinkng possibly Amsterdam or Barcelona. I've been to Barcelona but never Amsterdam, but really don't mind traveling to either! The idea is to give ourselves something to look forward to and then a couple days to destress before we launch into writing our essays.
*I am fully enjoying having my very own bathroom. Never before have I had a bathroom all to myself. I have always had at least one roommate sharing a bathroom with me. It's so nice to not have to worry about finding an empty roll of TP. . .ha ha!
My apologies for not having any new photos to post as I know they are more enjoyable than just reading my journal entries. Weather permitting, Yiota and I will be going into London tomorrow to do some sight seeing which will provide many photo opportunities. Now, if I could just get it to stop raining. . .
