The past couple weeks have been pretty busy--a good busy though. Term 2 is in full swing and in addition to the regular readings and classwork, I am also trying to sort out my topic for my dissertation. The weather has also gotten much colder, and we even had snow Wednesday night. Nothing much compared to what people at home are dealing with, but enough to cause problems on the roads and trains for the morning commute. Lots of people in my classes and building were really excited because they had never really seen snow before! There were even a couple guys having a snowball fight when I was walking to class. Too bad it was all melted by the time my first class ended at 11:00 am! So I guess this won't be a snow-less winter for me after all.
On Friday evening one of my professors hosted a party for all of the masters students in the Anthroplogy department. Not everyone was able to attend, but there was a pretty good crowd. Everyone was supposed to make a dish to share, and I ended up making an apple pie. The trip to her house in Camden from the university was quite long and I was surprised that the pie survived the tube ride without turning to mush. Holding a pie while standing on a crowded subway train is not the most pleasant of experiences. All in all though it was a pleasant night and everyone had a nice time socializing and relaxing.
And then on Saturday I went with Yiota, Dao, and Eva into London to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. I don't care if my Frommer's guide says it is overrated, we had loads of fun! At first it was a little creepy as the figures (for the most part) look very real. That didn't stop us from coming up with all kinds of crazy poses and being huge dorks! Several times other people were laughing at us or commented on our acting ability which just encouraged us even more! It was the fun, stress-relieving day we all needed. Plus, I had found a web-site where we ordered our tickets so we ended up getting in cheaper and didn't have to wait in the queue (the line) to get in. I would love to go back again when they change the displays and 'meet' some more celebrities.
After several hours of posing with wax figures, we were all starving so we headed to Chinatown for lunch. We ate at this Japanese restuarant that had delicious food at great prices. Yiota and I were proud of ourselves for eating our meals without asking for a fork and knife, although we were a bit slower than Dao (from Thailand) and Eva (from Taiwan) who were slightly more skilled with their chopsticks! Just as we were leaving the resturaunt, a little truck drove by with a singing handyman! (That's the last photo in my new album.) It was just so unexpected that people stopped and watched him as he paused along the side of the street, belted out an Elton John tune, and let bubbles blow from the side of his truck. You just never know what you might see in London!
