Monday 2nd May
Today Jenny, Damian and I checked out of our rooms at 11am, left our luggage and headed by metro into Uptown to meet Chris and Nicki. Because of the announcement of the shooting of Bin Laden there was great jubilation , but thankfully we had visited the areas affected so could avoid the crowds. There was a downside though and that was a downside though and that was that security was at its highest level meaning our bags were searched as we entered the metro, the library and grand Central Station, oh and not to mention the 2 helicopters hovering over ground zero for the entire day.
Jenny visited The Rock whilst we found Nicki and Chris, or rather after we had walked the wrong way in circles trying to find Grand Central Station for our rendezvous. After 45minutes of being ‘close to the station’ we sat on the chairs outside the library and asked them to come and find us, which they did! We visited the library which is very grand and a beautiful place of tranquillity in the heart of New York.
We met Jenny for lunch under the Rock, visited the Lego Shop before saying goodbye to Nicki and Chris and heading back to Seaport via Grand Central Station which we were now near!!! A very impressive and somewhat romantic place I thought. Very well restored.
Jenny headed for the airport by taxi, Damian and I took a leisurely stroll down to the pier at Seaport before having an early evening meal at our favourite Italian Restaurant. We then took the metro and the sky train to the airport.
Here the fun began. The flight was overbooked by 29 passengers, so once we had all checked in and boarding was beginning they asked for volunteers to ’stand down’. The offer was $600 per person, plus hotel overnight plus meals, plus transfers…..so we did it. Mean it was the easiest money I have ever earnt, $1200 in flight coupons for us to sleep in The Doubletree Hotel overnight and eat their food for the next day before being transported to our flight the next day. Not bad eh. It means we go to San Diego next March for Geraldine’s 60th for free!!!!
