The weather forecast for today was fine in the morning and raining in the afternoon so after breakfast we decided to go cycling in central park, followed by spending the late afternoon at the Museum of the Red Indians. Huh, what a good plan. Lindy, Stan , Damian and I got about 400m from the hotel on our way to the metro before there was a crack of lightening, rumbling thunder and torrential rain. We sheltered under the canopy of a closed café and donned our rain gear. The wind was absolutely whipping through the roads between the sky scrapers…no chance of using umbrellas. During a lull in the rain and a lull in the wind we made our way towards the Liberty Island ferry, just to do a recki for another day. From the waterfront we could see that there was a large gap in the clouds , plenty of wind but sunshine on its way. Significantly, the sudden downpour had totally diminished the queue for the ferry to Liberty Island….so, guess what we did…yep, bought a $13 ticket for Liberty island and Ellis Island and headed through the security tent and on to the ferry. After much picture taking and walking around Liberty Island we caught the ferry to Ellis Island and did the culture thing…I must admit to grabbing 40winks in the film show about the immigrants. A very well put together museum and exhibits we thought. During another rain shower we grabbed a snack, a good salad, and between showers we boarded the ferry back to Seaport. On the way back to the hotel we walked to ground zero and looked at the construction site of the new World Trade Centre as well as the firefighters plaque…over 360 fire fighters died as a result of their work on that day. I hadn't realised that until now. We also visited the church close to the site and looked at the photos and exhibits of the work that the community did during the aftermath.
A quick change before we headed out to meet Richard and Kate for their welcome event at a tapas bar on the corner of 39th and 8th . Caught a yellow cab Uptown, another tick in my box of 'things to do in New York'. We stayed for an hour before heading on foot to see the Show Jersey Boys. Wow, what a show. The band were almost exactly like Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons. The audience absolutely loved them, especially as they were a local group. They were singing and clapping along to the music. The dancing girls and the costumes were really superb, very 50s and early 60s.
After the show Damian and I walked back through Times Square which was all light up and buzzing with life. They were erecting two stages and 2 giant TV screens for The Royal Wedding starting at 4am!!!! We decided to carry on walking down Broadway thinking that 1st street would be Seaport, where our hotel is….it wasn't!!! Lower Manhatten has names not numbers. As a result we walked the full length of Broadway and arrived at the bar opposite our hotel 2 hours later. The small lager was very well deserved.
