Well, what can I say about today. 6 of us a driver and a guide went to the Perito Moreno Glacier....later I will furnish you with the photos of it´s majesty. It is of gigantic proportions...I mean, I´ve traversed the arret on Mont Blanc and skied down La Mer De Glace.....it is by comparison like a strand of hair.
It is vast, 35km long, and 4 - 5km wide on the face we are looking at today, 40metres height above the water level and in places 150metres depth below the water, and it moves at 1 to 2 metres a day, but equally 1-2 metres fall off each day. Today we were there for five hours, and the time flew. We saw the most enormous face of the glacier crack and break off into the water doing that massive plunge and splash thing. Amazing. Lots of comparitively smaller falls which prior to the ´big one´we thought was stunning.
Photos will show something of the spectacular glacier but not the true essence.
We took a boat ride to the front of the glacier and then walked around on the ´balconies´which are metal walkways with wooden banisters...very well organised, not many people and excellent walking routes to see the glacier.
Stan and Lindy, you would love this hotel...it´s small, and all the furniture and floors are made from quality varnished wood, very colonial and homely. By the way Stan, there was so much shaped drift/dead wood in the park...but we´re not allowed to take it out, otherwise you´d have had some wonderful new piece to varnish!!
Off to take a look at the pink flamingos that are feeding in Lake Argentino next to the hotel...don´t ask me what they´re doing here...it´s absolutely freezing and the wind is blasting down from the mountains...I have full thermals on and t shirt, thin fleece, thick fleece, then windproofs...but it´s sunny and lovely!!!
Tomorrow we have a 7.30am start and are going into the moutains to see another galcier or two by mini bus, boat and walking...hope we see another chunk fall into the water.
Just back form dinner and concert..open air cos it´s summer...families with babes in arms wrapped in blankets swaying to the music...great!!! Also saw a beauty contest all the girls had at least a size 14 bust and yes Stan they had curves and bums, best of all there was a group of Salsa dancers who were fab...girls wore high heeled red shoes and skirts with black tops and undergarments...in my next life I´m going to be a Salsa dancer.
Wallos, vinos typos Mendoza tinto spello mistakos!! Graham Lake, your cheesecake has just dropped to 2nd position on the pud league....national Argentinean coconut ice and dolce de leche has just shot to 1st place..photo to follow.
Night all...hey bruv , didn´t do too badly today for valentines...glacier, evening meal wine and a free concert...D has probs earned 10 years worth of credits.
