Tuesday 27th
Today was our final day in Durban. The weather was very hot and very, very humid so we were all eager to get back to Cape Town! We spent the day visiting old family friends and again I heard lots of stories from years back when Chris was small! In the evening we went out with Chris' grandparents to a restaurant called 'Ocean Basket' which serves seafood (obviously, I hear you say!). As we sat in the restaurant enjoying dinner (calamari count 7 & 8) the rain came again! I can't get used to hot rain - very bizarre! The lightening here is also very different; it's not just a few flashes every 5 minutes but rather every 5 seconds! Anyway we got home and packed our bags ready for the flight back to Cape Town in the morning.
Wednesday 28th
We arrived at the airport for 10am and met up with Tim who had been dropped off by Mary & Tony. As Tony reads this blog I would like to thank him for pointing out the error in my blog from Thurs 22nd;
"I noticed all the people in the sea were swimming in certain marked-off areas - I was told this was because of sharks! I forgot that I wasn't in Spain but in South Africa where great-whites are found in the waters!"
After speaking with Tony I found I had been mis-informed by a certain someone and the actually reason was that the sections marked-off were covered by the lifeguards! So thank you Tony!!
When we went to check-in our bags we were told to weigh them with the trolley on a scale (we were allowed 20kgs each). After weighing all our bags we were told we were 6kgs over our total group allowance. Tim pointed out to the lady controlling the scale that "how do they know all the trolleys weigh the same?" and asked to weigh each bag individually. He then noticed that if a bag weighed 17.2kgs (as mine did), then they rounded it up to 18kgs! Anyway after much faffing and simply putting things in our hand luggage we soon 'lost' the 6 kgs we were supposedly 'over'!!!
"We will encounter some thunderstorms during this flight but will do what we need to fly around them", said the pilot on our flight back to Cape Town. People will know that I'm terrified of flying at the best of times so to hear this announcement whilst parked on the runway didn't set me up for a good flight! Although it was only 1hr 45mins, and we only had a few rough bumps, I was SO happy to land in sunny Cape Town!! We went to pick up our hire car to find that they didn't have it so Helen, Geoff & Tim were in one car and Chris & I followed behind in another (a red Punto believe it or not!!) After dropping Tim at Grant's place we headed back to our apartment and comfy beds!!! We decided to eat in a bar that Chris & I had visited last week with Ryan - a Cuban bar called 'Buena Vista'. After lots of tapas and cocktails we headed back upstairs to the apartment and had a bloody good nights sleep!!
