So we got on the plane for Dubai at 8:45pm and didn't take off until 9:15pm - a bit later than planned! Chris sat next to the window, I was in the middle and this other guy sat on the aisle and pretty much slept the whole way! I was my usual self and cried like a baby on take off! It was a pretty smooth flight, a little bumpy for me in the middle (I'm sure everyone else didn't notice it!). The food was good and we both managed to watch a couple of films. We didn't get much sleep at all so by time we landed in Dubai at 7am, we were all very tired!
We only had an hour in Dubai so went straight to the next boarding gate. After a debate about the shower in the toilet cubicles (I thought it was a mini shower to freshen up but was then later informed that it was to wash certain areas after a certain activity!), we were then called for our flight to Cape Town! This time we were in the seats that we booked and ended up at the back of the plane in rows of 2. So this time I got to sit near the window!! When leaving Dubai we managed to catch a glimpse of The Palm Island (is that what it's called??) Nice if you have enough money! This flight was a little bumpier than the first one and, with feeling tired after sitting so long, I got worked up again ha ha. Luckily everyone was asleep so I didn't feel so stupid! After a long 9 hrs and 5 mins flight, we flew into Cape Town. The views when coming into Cape Town were stunning and I had my first glimpse of Table Mountain. It was at this point that I got very excited and knew I was finally on holiday!!!!.
As we stepped off the plane, we got an idea of the heat. At 4:30pm it was a lovely 28'C - just my kind of weather for December! After collecting the bags, getting through passport control (I got my first stamp in my passport!), we said goodbye to Tim as he departed with his friend Grant. Geoff collected the hire car - a VW Combi (new type K-taxi I'm told!) - and we set off for the apartment. Cape Town is very flat but surrounded by mountains. I also saw for the first time a shanty town on the side of the motorway. It's quite weird when you see one for the first time that's not on some TV documentary.
The apartment is Tyger Cliffs, opposite Tyger Valley shopping Centre (which I've heard so much about). It overlooks an old quarry which has now been filled with water. It's actually very pretty with all the restaurants/bars around the edge. We dumped our bags, freshened up and then set out for Tyger Valley on our search for an Ocean Basket restaurant that Chris was very excited about. However when we got there, we soon found out that Tyger Valley had changed since Chris last visited and Ocean Basket was no-more…RIP. So we found a place called Willowbridge and found a little place for dinner. Chris has his first Castle Lager of the holiday and his first portion of Calamari (which from now on I will be keeping count!). After a long 48 hours we headed back to the apartment and hit the sack. I'd like to say it was the best sleep, given how tired we were, but a bloody Dassie (a mountain rat - think very big gerbil!) kept us awake half the night with its call. Note to self - buy earplugs!
