Road trip - day 29 - Saturday
Had a good nights sleep, breakfast in the sun on the patio including pain au chocolate & croissant from the bakery opposite.
Promise of a beautiful day with blue sky's & temp of over 20c
Decided to have a full day out & set out for the Granite Rose Coast (cote de granit Rose) - around 50 miles westwards along the coast. We went along the main road, me driving because we knew St Brieuc has a couple of viaducts that G wouldn't be happy with
Headed towards Lannion & stopped at a rather run down LeClerc for petrol & basic provisions. Got some macaroons but had to eat them quick as they were melting! Starting to think about pressies to take home. G bought the fuel on his credit card but was spooked by only being allowed 70 euros so hence the search for a wifi source to check his balance online! Would you believe it .... we found a Decathlon!!!!! We logged on & surfed & caught up .... love Decathlon, they even have comfy sitting areas!
Carried on towards Trebeurden & parked on the road opposite cafés & bars overlooking an impressive marina. The tide was well out. We had a drink & tried to work out which way the sun would be setting, apparently the rose granite coast is beautiful at sunset with the light on the rocks. Walked along the front to the end of the marina & back, decided to sit in the sun with our books for a short while.
Carried on towards Tregastel Plage & Ploumanac'h, wound down a steep road into a beautiful bay to a more upmarket seaside resort with bars & restaurants overlooking a wide sandy beach with surfers, yachts & the odd bigger boat moored out to sea. Just out to sea beyond the bay were the Sept Iles. Parked a little way up the hill & walked down with our books, read a while & had a drink & ice cream before moving on
Carried on around the coast towards Perros-Guirec, stopped at a view point at the top of the very steep hill between bays. We could clearly see a car park with a coastal path around THE most amazing boulders of granite - they looked like massive balls of plasticine set on top of each other!! We headed down & followed signs for a light house down a narrow road with overhanging boulders
The scenery was just amazing, we took the path past a lifeboat station with a massive slipway into a bay surrounded by high rocks. Carried on around the headland to the lighthouse. So many photo opportunities! The ride had started to come in & the water was swirling around the odd rocks & boulders that made up the coast & inland scenery
We decided to stay until the sundown but this was likely to be a couple of hours off. We took a really short hop into Perros & realised it was full of restaurants & opportunities for a meal. Had galettes outside at a restaurant with wooden tables outside in a courtyard with thatched buildings on either side, very nice!
The big decision now was where to watch the sunset. We carried on to have a look at the beach; what a stunning setting. In the hotel to the left a wedding was on & the bride was on the beach, they had a singer & the mood was just wonderful! We took an oversized deck chair on the terrace of the hotel on the right & sat & waited. The sun set is obviously a spectacle around these parts with people & cameras turning up at regular intervals. The sun set quite late, after 9pm, but was absolutely stunning.
We had a long trek back in the dark, an hour & a half. Straight to bed on our return!
