Road trip - day 28 - Friday
Sadly left behind Wendy, Nigel, Moses et al. Somehow the car is getting easier to pack - but I actually think more stuff is going on the back seat!
Blazing sunshine, even early on on the day. Had breakfast outside using the remnants of what we had on the fridge. Left Wendy planting flowers!
Had a quick stop in Richelieu, food & provisions market. Had a coffee & mint tea at the Brocante cafe; 9 euros!!! .... And the cups were chipped! But it was nice to watch the world go by in the sun
Carried on to cross the Loire at Samur. Stopped & parked on the road in the centre just at lunchtime. Had a walk through the cafés, restaurants & shops & found the river. From the bridge we could see the chateau high above the town. Decided on lunch at a restaurant down by the river bank; had salads, basic but very nice! On the way back to the car had a nice ice cream.
Decided to go from Samur on the toll road, estimated journey time 3 hours from Samur to Megrit. Seemed a very long trip! The road was toll most of the way - 20 euro charge! Stopped at one services
Arrived in anticipation of what the Megrit Gite would be like. Very disappointing. Very well renovated but very small, no proper private sitting out area. If Keith & Janet had of come it would have been disastrous. The property is over 3 floors; top floor 2 single beds with a bathroom & handbasin, 1st floor accessed by stone steps from outside is kitchen & sitting room, bottom floor is double bedroom with toilet & shower. Strange set up & not at all suitable for a sleep 4. Both of us are feeling pretty disappointed with the set up.
We sat outside & moved the table to get the last of the sun. Had bread from the local Boulangerie (a few steps away, but Tesco type bread) & cheese from the Vital shop up the road.
Went for a quick walk around the church, obviously a very old village with an ossuary in the churchyard. Decided to have a drive to orientate. Found a charming brasserie in a nearby village. Had a quick drink - the old lady owner seems to open her front room as an establishment. She was obviously closing up but we will go back.
Spent quite sometime exploring, the area seems really nice. Back to Magrit & our first night
