Greetings!
This has been quite the week. Started with an incredible night off in Nashville, TN. A rocky show in Roanoke, VA (Ren's mic went out in the opening and we all thought the audience was going to riot, actually yelling at poor Eric to turn on his mic! Mine went out partway through my first big scene, but thankfully it came back before I was yelled at, too...). And a tiny venue, but a visit with one of my best friends in Charlottesville, VA. But what I really want to focus on here is the past 24 hours...they've been pretty ridiculous...
We arrived yeaterday afternoon at a Days Inn in Yanceyville, NC...it is the worst hotel we've gone to by far. The first room Lindsay and I were given hadn't been cleaned. Turns out the last people in it had never checked out and somehow it got back into rotation. The second room we were given had been "cleaned" but had dirt on the bathroom floor and Lindsay's bed had a beetle-like bug on it...under the comforter. The extra sheets we were given had cigarette burns in them. We were both convined we would sleep on top of the beds fully dressed that night. Heading to the theater, Matt (our company manager) put a travel option to a vote: leave at 5am the next morning and drive 10 hours right into a show OR have a 1am bus call, drive through the night, and get to our next stop around 10am the next morning. Option B won by a landslide.
We get to the theater and...well...it's tiny. Not only is it tiny, but the band is playing in a "dance studio" right below the stage with a floor that creaks when you walk on it. And we had to walk on it b/c it was the only way to get from one side of the stage to the other. The seating looked like a sports arena, only worse because many of the seats were on an angle, but didn't directly face the stage (I'm not describing it well...take a look at the picture). And the audience that filled the seats was lackluster at best. Great. After the show we headed right back to the hotel to get ready for the bus. Under our hotel sign it said GOD BLESS AMERICA...this is God reference #2 for the week (I just finished reading THE DEVIL AND MISS PRYM...an excellent book, by the way...). I had no idea how much God would be a presence this weekend...but we'll get to that...
Now, I have to admit, I tend to enjoy bus travel...simply because I get on a bus and fall asleep. I have a newly acqured eggcrate that has made a lovely bed on the floor and I go into a coma state. So the idea of travelling through the night on the bus thrilled me. And it didn't fail to deliver. We got on around 1:20am...George, our bus driver, slept through his alarm, so we got a bit of a late start waiting for him (I was happy to know he'd been resting up for the trip!!)...and woke up at the hotel around 10:30am with all the rooms ready. Ahh...
But the show tonight. We were in Marion, OH which looked like a pretty bland place. The theater itself was gorgeous, though freezing (I spent most of the show in the Green Room huddled around a space heater). The real excitement came AFTER the show. We got back on the bus and Matt gets on the mic with an announcement. He knows we can't make everyone happy all of the time...but he wanted to pass on a note that was given about Glenn & Me (for those of you who don't know, we play the Reverend & Wife). Apparently a patron came up to him after the show with a possessed look in her eye and got right up in his face. She told him that, in the final prom scene (the end of the show where we do an adorable cha-cha) my breast had braised Glenn's chest, we far too intimate, and Glenn (as the Reverand) shouldn't have been dancing at all. We are both possessed by the Devil and she's going to be praying for our souls all night. How fitting, given that tomorrow is Easter. (in case you missed it, this was God reference #3) Absolutely terrifying...but all you can do is laugh...cause if I'M possessed by the Devil, then we're all going to Hell!! Thank you Marion, OH. A few of my cast members threw an Easter egg hunt tonight...I was very greatful they allowed me to participate, given that I'm possessed by the Devil and all...
And that's my last 24 hours. Hoping the next 24 aren't quite so crazy!! Headed to Chicago tomorrow with the night off. Good friends, good food...and hopefully no more references to the Devil!!!
Enjoy!
