Greetings!
Well, this has been a nice uneventful week. Started in Georgia (Cedartown & Savannah) then on to Florida (Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach Gardens & Lakeland).
Cedartown, GA: I was sick as a dog. Wasn't sure I was going to make it through the show! Thankfully, this is the worst I got and I somehow got through...This venue was an interesting one. There were 2 dressing rooms for everyone, with pretty much no wing space. There was also no orchestra pit, so the band played in a different room. This was also the place where that provided us with food...by giving us vouchers to a Chinese buffet before the show. Ooof...
Savannah, GA: I love Savannah. It is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. And every time I go I fall in love with it a little more. This time I have a new reason to love it: The Lady & Sons restaurant. It's Paula Dean's restaurant started with her sons. I felt like I made a pilgrimage. There was very little I could eat...she cooks everything in pork lard or butter...but what I could have was incredible. Thanks Paula Dean! theladyandsons.com/ The theater was stunning. I think it's the largest we've played...seats for days! It was such a treat after playing so many tiny places.
Ft. Lauderdale: What a great weekend. We stayed for 4 nights in apartment-type 2-bedroom rooms with kitchens. It was like being home... The theater itself had a terrible stage but was full of the most incredible history. The backstage was full of posters signed by entire casts from over the years. A small sampling of names: Eartha Kitt, Mandy Patinkin, Howard Keel, Nathan Lane, Robert Morse, Elizabeth Taylor, Hal Linden, Maureen Stapleton, Penny Fully, Deborah Allen, Carol Channing, Mary Martin. It was an honor to play that stage.
Palm Beach Gardens: Wow. Well...our dressing rooms were in the bathrooms. There was an outdoor office that we could have used, except it was supposed to rain... It was a pretty house, but the theater is used to concerts, not touring musicals. So there was no wing space and what little there was was cluttered with their tech equipment (they didn't want to move it for one night). This was a fun one... But it turned into a great night. My friend Jesse (one of the tech guys on GIRL'S NIGHT) lives there with his fiance and they showed me a great night out. Thanks, Jesse!
Lakeland: This is, by far and away, my favorite theater we've played. It's just beautiful, both front of house and backstage. The tech guys were nice enough to put Snowflake (the inflatable penguin that travels around with us) in Lindsay's & my dressing room. And the audience...we added 2 minutes to the show from audience laughter. They loved every single moment and were on their feet as soon as we finished the finale. Our CM told us we were the best selling show on their entire touring Broadway season. And this is an audience that is normally leaving during curtain call, not standing applauding. LOVE LAKELAND!!!
Today was almost 600 miles on the bus...it's as long as it sounds...stopping for the night in Charlotte, NC. It's amazing that a day on the bus can be almost as exhausting as a day of shows. Heading to Harrisonburg, VA tomorrow. Looks like this is becoming a once a week entry...
Enjoy!
