Not a whole lot to report about this past week except a lot of shows and a lot of travel.
Harrisonburg, VA was an interesting show because 1) our cast (and musical director) was hit with the Plague round #2 and I wasn't sure we would make it through and 2) there was no pit so band played directly outside of some of our dressing rooms...so the show was both loud and silent at the same time...somewhat bizarre... Harrisonburg, VA scared me somewhat because it is the most backwoods location we have played so far. This is where, when I went into WlaMart. I sw 16-year-olds with toddlers and a teenage boy buying his first rifle with his dad. I have a number of friends who grew up or went to college in and around this area, and they reminded me that to the locals I am a Yankee...*I* am the bizarre outsider...and the sooner I could get out the more comfortable I'd feel. Yikes!!
Wilkesboro, NC was fine. A nice venue, nothing to write home about. Honestly, not all that memorable...
Winston-Salem, NC...Now this was a nice venue. It's part of North Carolina School for the Arts (which, for those of you who don't know, is a great arts school). It was raining and absolutely freezing, but a nice city to spend an evening.
Now, the venue we're in today and tomorrow...Newberry, SC...oh where to begin...alright, well first of all, we're doing doubles on a Monday & Tuesday...who goes to a matinee on those days??? I'll tell you.... NO ONE. We had maybe 70 people at today's mat. It was like doing a show for no one. (I want to pause and say that Wes went on for the roe of Willard and did a phenominal job...way to go Wes!!!) The stage is smaller than any we have played...not only did we lose depth (like concert halls) but we lost width...meaning we had almost no stage space to play with. We also had no wing space, so we waited out in hallways until it was time to enter. The stage wasn't big enough for our marley (our floor that we lay down for performances) so we performed on their bare stage...it was not safe. We had cast members slipping and sliding all over, some of them falling in the middle of scenes/songs. People got permission to wear street shoes for the big cowboy dance number in act 2 simply for safety. And there was basically no set. It was such a pitiful show...and a few other factors came into play...that I actually laughed on stage at one of the most dramatic moments of the show. (we call this "breaking"...just being completely out of character_.) There's a scene towards the end where my husband (the preacher) is talking in church about our dead son, and I look at our daughter (Ariel, played by my friend/roommate Lindsay)...and today I blatantly laughed in her face. I just couldn't hold it together any more. I have only broken on stage (this seriously) one other time in my life...it takes a LOT to get me to this point...the entire cast knew we were lost when me of all people lost it. That's how bad it was...
Not a whole lot of pictures this time round...
Enjoy!
