I haven't adusted to the 6 hour time difference, so I didn't fall asleep until 4 AM Krakow time. I got up at 7 and had breakfast with Scott before work, went back to the room and completely passed out. When I woke up it was 1:30 PM. Scott had emailed and said that Ruben, the guy who kind of runs the Krakow office, wanted to take us out to dinner with some other office people. Janusz would pick me up at 5:00 in the lobby. I mostly unpacked and checked out things that I wanted to do while in Krakow until it was time to leave. There are currently 2 other men from Cincinnati at the Poland office, so Ruben took all of us out. On the way to the restaurant, we stopped at the Schindler Factory. I wasn't prepared, so I didn't have my camera. We piled back into the car and headed to Restauracja Ogniem i Mieczem. This is a medieval restaurant that apparently features authentic Polish cuisine. There we joined a few Polish people from the Krakow office and another guy from Atlanta.
Something that I love about Europe: sparkling water. It's everywhere. When I ordered it at this restaurant it came in a big pitcher. It was awesome. In Poland, they look at you like you have antlers if you don't drink alcohol...which I generally don't. More on that later. Ruben ordered a variety of food for all of us to share. The first thing we ate was dense bread with lard spread on it. And more dense bread, with what I can only describe as congealed bacon grease spread on it. I tasted it. It was gross. The theory goes that you eat it to soak up the vodka. Polish food is pretty fatty. We also had duck, pork knuckle, some other variations of pork, differents types of kraut, apple pie and some other odds and ends. Some of it was good (the duck), some of it wasn't (almost everything else).
And then the tray of honey vodka came out. Everyone took a shot after a toast of sorts, me included. Honey vodka is really good. Very smooth. The second round of shots were bigger than the first...but when in Rome.... I was feeling pretty buzzed because I cannot hold my liquor, and then I took a third shot. I was pretty silly drunk at this point. I couldn't stop laughing and Scott had to help me walk straight, but it was really tasty.
Janusz dropped us back at the hotel. One wall of our room was a giant window with a sliding door that looks out over Krakow. We noticed the room stinking not long after we got back. By 2:30 AM it was unbearable. The entire room smelled like a smoldering campfire...if you had your face directly in the line of smoke. We knew it was coming from outside. Scott talked to the guy at the desk and he suggested that it's just how Krakow smells (!), so at 3:00 AM we switched rooms. By this time I had sobered up but still didn't fall asleep until like 5 AM.
