Today was our first full day in Krakow. We had breakfast at the hotel, which was good. The initial plan was for Scott's Polish co-worker Lukasz to show us around town at noon...however jet lag had set in pretty bad for me so Scott and Lucasz ventured out while I stayed behind. Truth be told, I was so drained I don't even remember Scott leaving. I napped, Scott returned, and we headed out around 4:00 PM local time. We took a taxi to the Main Market Square on Rynek Główny. It's right in the middle of the city and the main touristy spot. It was quite cold and windy today and it was spitting snow here and there. Once we started walking around it was strange. The streets and buildings are so old and there is just this vibe-y thing going on where you can practically imagine the streets being occupied by Nazi's. We did a lap around the square, walked through Cloth Hall which is chock-full of vendors selling jewelry, furs, clothing, dolls...really anything you can imagine. I plan on hitting that place up again. We were both hungry so we decided to find someplace to eat.
We ended up at this Polish restaurant called Wesele. It was small and quaint and we had a cozy little table by the front window. Scott had these meat filled dumplings that were....so not good. I don't even know how to describe the taste, or lack thereof. I ordered these turkey kebabs with a garlic and mustard sauce and grilled red peppers, onions and bacon. De-lish! Very, very good. And we had a side of butter dumplings. I'm not quite sure how they manage to make potatoes rubbery, but that's the best way I can describe them. They were better than Scott's dinner, but not all that great either. And that damn Coke light. I love Diet Coke. In Europe, at least the various parts we've been to, they have Coke Light, which is totally not the same thing. And they give you a tiny, expensive bottle of it and you drink it pretty close to room temperature. The parts of Europe we've visited have not been big on ice at all. And the kicker was that I knocked my glass over with my menu and my Coke light went allover the table. Ultimate sadness and embarassment. I enjoyed my dinner there otherwise.
We took some night shots around the square and then walked back to the hotel. Tomorrow is my first day here alone while Scott is at work. We'll see what I can get myself into.
