Kate's Chronicles
Well after all my woes I finally arrived safe and sound about 2300 on Thursday night. Completely exhausted I literally fell into bed not even bothering to check out my surroundings. Friday morning and I finally get to meet Fan Fan who has been my contact with the University....talk about great first impressions...I hadn't even had a shower!!! Anyway she is really lovely and is very organised with all the procedures I have to go through. By Friday afternoon I had registered at the local police station and had opened a Chinese bank account!!! Very easy when you are treated as a VIP!!! Campus card and Foreign Expert Certificate already completed so only have to visit the public security bureau Monday morning to get my residents permit for Nanjing and I'm all done. Amazingly quick for China!!!
My first impressions.....
My new apartment is great. The kitchen, dining and lounge areas are all in one big room which lead off to a passage area where my wardrobe and storage area is on the right and opposite that is my bathroom. You then walk through to my bedroom where the TV is and then out onto my balcony. More compact than my previous place but is still very comfortable. Kitchen is perfect for me - has a microwave , fridge, sink and a continuous boiling urn - nothing else needed for someone who has no interest in cooking!! My desk is in the lounge area with plenty of drawers so again its perfect for the neatness freak!! Bathroom/laundry is tiny but who cares its not like I spend a lot of time there. I have a lovely comfortable bed that is really very soft by Chinese standards. My apartment is on the 6th floor and yes there is an elevator. Mum will be pleased...we have security on the front gate as well as security in our building....so no chance of me being kidnapped or whatever other horror events she has been dreaming up!! As faculty staff I get an access card so I can come and go as I please. There are students in my building who have to be in by 2300 or bear the dark looks of the security people!!
This campus is right in the middle of the city with shops galore in every direction!! Mind you it is very cold at the moment so I don't think I will be venturing too far till it warms up. I have found the supermarket, convenience store and a lovely French patisserie all within the one block. My apartment block is right next to the cafeteria so only a 1 minute walk to get fed. Have not been out to the other campus yet so will report on that after I've seen it - the Uni provides faculty staff with free transport between campus's and it is a 2 minute walk to where I need to get the bus. So far all seems to be very convenient and there are plenty of parks close by so I don't feel like I'm in a concrete jungle.
Meet with the Dean of the School of Nursing on Monday afternoon and will know more about my new life then.
Bye for now. xxx
