Kate's Chronicles
Nothing earth shattering has happened this week. I've managed to get around without getting lost - well took a slight detour the wrong way - but no epic journeys way out to distant suburbs!!
Seeing more of the city with visits to the Jiangsu Cultural Centre and the Drum Tower which is considered to be the symbolic center of a city. There is a beautiful park and garden surrounding the tower. This is where I took a slight detour as it's on a roundabout with 9 exits!! Took the wrong exit but only a few streets out of my way!! Still wandering down so many streets and taking photos as I go.....came across "1912" which is a chic restaurant and entertainment area. Quite pretty but I'm told it gets very loud and somewhat messy at night. Also found the Zifeng Tower - not hard really as its the tallest building in Nanjing!! Apparently it has a lovely restaurant on the 84th floor but I can't see me going there as I don't have a head for heights no matter how nice the view!
Starting to socialise more with the other expats from the Uni so have been out to dinner a few times. Went to the infamous "Jimmys" bar with an American colleague who was hanging out for a decent American burger which we managed to get! Strangely enough I met up with 2 Aussies at the bar (they recognised my accent) who are here visiting their daughter so ended up going out for dinner with them this week and met another expat who is also teaching in Nanjing at a private college. Its been slow but gradually I'm starting to build up a good social network. Have also had the pleasure of dining with one of my Chinese colleagues who is great fun ,can speak English and helps me with my woeful Chinese pronunciation!
With my son having recently announced his engagement the thought of weddings has obviously been in my subconscious mind and I have noticed some of the different wedding attire on offer in this fair city. I've added some photos for you to have a laugh as I'm sure my descriptions just could not do justice to the delightful creations on offer from the meringue style toilet roll holder to the matching Bride and Groom outfits!!! Matt and Bianca.......hmmmm....I don't think it is quite their style!!!
Uni is going well - we are almost half way through the semester already! Won't be long and I'll have to start preparing exams for my poor students. I can remember only too well how much I hated exams and here I am now setting them!!
Bye for now. xx
