Kate's Chronicles
Have been back from Sri Lanka for 3 weeks now and already I want another holiday!!! The night I got back was Lantern Festival so I did not escape the sound of fireworks this spring Festival - but I decided that a night of sounding like I was living in a war zone was a small price to pay for the sheer enjoyment I got from my holiday and so I though of it as my welcome back display!!. Being the Year of the Snake the lantern makers were busy designing new lanterns for this year in the shape of snakes but they still had many of my favourites such as lotus flowers.
No sooner returned and had to dive back into teaching. This semester I am teaching undergraduate Medical students the fine art of English speaking along with Shirley - my Aussie mate - we have been given the textbook which just about put us to sleep it is sooooo boring...needless to say we are planing to make our classes a lot more interesting than what is in the book!!!
I also continue teaching the young Medical Expert program which is an absolute delight and gives me a great deal of satisfaction. These Drs have been selected by the Provincial Government as potential future leaders of healthcare for China so there is a huge desire to master English as they have the opportunity to go overseas and/or present at international conferences. My whole group is highly motivated and we have some great class discussions on all matters of healthcare. Only down side is that I have to teach on weekends as the Drs all work in the hospitals of a weekday.
Thought we were going into spring last week when we had one day with 28 degrees but the next day it was back down to 9 degrees. Brrrr am really feeling the cold after the tropical weather of Sri Lanka but I know that it will warm up here soon. The spring blossoms are starting to come out and we have the Plum Blossom Festival in Nanjing at this time. Even the students are starting to get outside with activities such as tug-o-war taking place on the campus. I am looking forward to being able to get out and about more as it warms up - its hard to motivate yourself when it is freezing cold!! Hoping to get a few trips in during the semester as there is still many places I want to visit.
Enjoyed a delightful dinner earlier this week compliments of the University. The Dean and Vice Dean took us out for dinner and presented us with a gift as a show of appreciation for what we have contributed to the university and its teaching. So nice to feel appreciated and I could not help but ponder....why did this not happen in Australia????
No more news for now. xxx
