Today is my first day of work in many many months and unfortunately I didn't sleep so well and was up at 5am waiting for the day to begin. I still feel really jet-lagged from my flight and not sleeping certainly hasn't helped. At 9am I started and today I was gardening - pulling out weeds in the flower beds and around the bungalows. To be honest my body hurt a lot whilst doing it and I certainly don't have any of the strength I used to have whilst going to the gym everyday but one look out to the horizon and remembering I am on the remotest island in the world makes it all worth it. At midday just as the sun was coming down strong; Peter told me I could knock off and go to the airport with him. We dropped a couple of his guests off and he showed me the process of dropping and picking people up - just incase I stay longer I can take over this role. We then headed back to the house but unfortunately Peter got called off again so I sat around chatting with his wife waiting his return to eat lunch. At around 3:30pm Peyer returned and we had a delicious Thai inspired dish of Satay Beef and avocado/lettuce salad - it was amazing and just what I needed; some more red meat. After lunch Peter showed me how to clean the rooms - he rushed through it but I got the main idea and the main thing is that the rooms are kept in impeccable condition. At 5pm I knocked off and headed straight for the bay to watch the locals surfing, whilst I was sitting there I ran into Tracy (the Canadian lady staying in the bungalows) and her friend Helen - both of them lovely ladies. I then ran into Loreta my Chilean friend and we decided to go for a walk around the bay looking at all the huge turtles swimming and bobbing their heads in and out of the water. The Moai at Tahai are famous for sunsets and all the tourists on the island go there around 8:30-9:00pm to watch the sun go down. Loreta and I went down and sat and watched as the sun sunk over the horizon and what a spectacular sight it was with beautiful oranges, pinks and yellows dancing across the falling horizon. I then had to find my way back to the house before it was completely dark. On the way back I ran into Tracy and Helen again who were also lost and after a couple of wrong turns and a bunch of walking we found the place. I made myself a very late dinner before falling on the bed exhausted and tired from my first hard days work in a long time.
