THE ASHES FINAL DAY - SYDNEY 05/01/07
Hi all,
Well, it has finally happened - I have become a cricket fan - sort of. It's been very hard to avoid really as the lads in the hostel were well into it and so if it wasn't on the TV we heard all about it at dinner. I had slowly started to understand it at the New Year's day match, but mainly I had got caught up in the Barmy Army fever, singing along and taking the mick out of the Ozzie's was just too much fun!
I was woken Friday (5th) morning by a text saying we are going to the ashes, be ready in 5 minutes. Even though I have spent the best part of 2 months with these people they still don't know me well enough to know that 5 mins is a very tight schedule for me! I made it though (well they say travelling changes you!) and off we went to the ground. We didn't have tickets but as it was looking like England would be out soon and there wasn't going to be a full day we knew we would be able to get tickets relatively cheap from a tout. Once we had our tickets we headed in only to find that already one of our batters was out (can't remember his name) and they had only been playing 5 minutes - best get to our seats quick. We were hoping to get a few beers in but couldn't leave our seats as we watched batters drop like flies. They did put in a last ditch attempt and managed to score some good runs but it was soon all over for England's batters. Oz to come on and finish us off, I must admin, I did enjoy it more when they came on, even as a complete cricket novice I could see good play when I saw it! We were lucky with our seats as we were right near the front, in the sunshine and next to the Barmy Army. We joined in the songs and watched as they managed to get each England player to wave, they even got the umpire to wave. The Ozzie players wouldn't join in and wave which prompted the song ' there's always one boring Ozzie!' It was funny as the Barmy Army sang songs taking the absolute mick out of the Ozzie's and calling them convicts, the Ozzie fans were taking photo's and filming it - good sense of humour all round. Another highlight of the day was watching the Ozzie fans getting arrested and thrown out for throwing things - not sure why they were angry as they were obviousely just about to win the Ashes. The best bit was when they were complaining tot he police that it's never English fans that get arrested - makes a change from the football!
We watched as the Ozzies won the Ashes and had to applaude, they deserved it. The England Team came over for photo's - I took some but they're not too clear, and then the Ozzie Team came over too. England, players and fans, took the defeat well and cheered for both teams. After the presentation, which we couldn't really see anyway, we left. Only to be met by a camera crew who wanted to interview me and Owen! I don't know a thing about the cricket but hey - I can do another TV appearance if oyu like! So they asked us questions about how gutted we were and how we thought England would do next time. I didn't have too much to say and so Owen did most of the talking, I just made sure I was in shot! It was shown on Sky Sports apparently, I've had a few e-mails from people who said they saw it - ahh fame at last!
So another good day, I could get used to this Ozzie way of life.......
Lots of love
