Hi all,
So another week has gone by in Coogee since I had my cast removed. The day I had it off was a bit of a downer as I thought I would be able to move a bit better than I actually could. I still had to use the crutches for a couple of days as I had limited movement in my ankle and so couldn’t really walk. My plans to celebrate by dancing the night away were put on hold! I decided to spend the next few days exercising my leg as much as possible so the crutches were left at home (I have actually started to refer to the hostel as home as I have been there so long!). I walked/limped to the beach and went swimming everyday. Once in the sea but then after being wiped out by a huge wave, I then decided to use the pools at the side of the beach. They are really cool, they have been made using huge rocks to block off the sea so that you are still swimming in the sea but you don’t get the huge waves crashing through so they are like huge swimming pools. I soon got most of the movement back in my ankle and was ready to celebrate. Thursday nights are free barbeque night and so off we went to our first Barbie since being in Oz! It was a fantastic night, we ate loads of food, drank loads of Goon (which is what they call the foil that holds the wine when you buy a 4 litre box of wine). We partied in the hostel back garden, sang songs, danced the night away and then decided we hadn’t had enough so off to the Coogee Bay Hotel for more dancing. The Coogee Bay Hotel, or CBH to us locals, is a really good night out as it has 7 different bars – ranging from a sports bar, outdoor bar, roof top bar and then clubs plating different kinds of music. The whole hostel was out and we had the best night (Kim and Nic – you want to see the new ‘hostel’ routine we have – it’s ace!)
The next night we had a quiet one and decorated the Christmas tree which was nice, but it doesn’t feel like Christmas at all, and I don’t think it will really since we will be on the beach in bikini’s having a Barbie!
Saturday night was Shona’s house warming. Shona stayed in our room at the hostel for a few weeks but has now moved into a house with her other crazy Irish mates. If I’ve not already mentioned, Coogee is the Irish capital of Sydney – I don’t think there are any Irish left in Ireland cos they’re all here! Anyway, another hostel night out up to Shona’s house warming. Another fab night, ending in the CBH - dancing the night away, and yes it had to happen, the dance off of all dance off’s occurred, needless to say I was the best! It was my first night wearing high heel shoes since leaving the UK – thanks for the parcel mum! Last night was the weekly pool competition, our hostel, the Wizard of Oz against the hostel down the road. Gary won, which meant we won, free drinks all round, another good night.
So I think I can safely say that I have celebrated enough now and I am getting back on the traveling/sightseeing trail now. We’re going to visit all the beaches and towns possible between now and xmas and I am finally going to get to do the Sydney sight seeing now that I can walk around. So much to do I don’t know where to start……
Oh I nearly forgot, there was excitement in the hostel this week as a lad, who had been staying there for about a week, robbed all the other people who were in his room. He must have planned it as he waited till they had gone out for a big night out and when they came back and went to sleep he rifled through there clothes and stole their wallets! All the money and cards had gone. We later found out that he checked out without paying and had given a false name and passport number. That morning he went straight out and managed to spend 2000 pounds before the cards were stopped. He went shopping, had his hair done – he even put his Macdonalds breakfast on the card! So the lads he stole from were fuming for days, then by coincidence they were down at the beach and saw him just walking along, so they all ran over and jumped him. Before they could kick the living daylights out of him the nearby police saw what was happening and came over to break it up. Once they had checked him out it turned out that his Visa for Oz had expired over a year ago and he had been funding his travels by stealing from other travelers! The good news is he is now in a detention centre awaiting deportation and facing the music when he gets back to Britain! I never liked him anyway!………
Lots of love Jules x x x
