Hello everybody,
Armed with a dirt cheap Greyhound pass, I headed down the coast to Mission Beach for a few chilled days. I did some terrific hiking trails in search of the elusive cassowary but still couldn't find any! The second day I headed over to Dunk Island, pretty much unspoilt once you leave the jetty. I did a circuit trail for 5 hours and met one other person! They make you sign in and out before you head off as people are prone to get lost in the bush for 48 hours or so. A few snakes and giant lizards on the way and I had the beautiful Coconut Beach all to myself for two hours...
Next up I headed down to Townsville and immediately jumped on a ferry to Magnetic Island. This island is stunning. I stayed at Horseshoe Bay in these dorms right in the forests, so plenty of possums and parrots hanging around. There were plenty of secluded beaches around the corner and on the best hiking trail, the Forts Walk, I finally spotted a wild koala sleeping in the tree. I was so close, and just watched him for a good half and hour. He woke up for a minute for a scratch and then fell back asleep. And they poo in their sleep. Ingenious.
Its been so easy meeting people here in Australia and you keep bumping into people again further down the coast. I'm now in Airlie Beach and leaving tonight for a 3 day diving/sailing trip out into the Whitsundays. Its blown a big hole in my budget, but then what are overdrafts for...
Hope everybody's well,
Lerve Jonny
