Final Australia post!
I made it to Sydney and it does live up to all expectations. The opera house looks mighty fine in the sunshine and I also managed to catch a ferry out to Manly for some good beach action. Finally Tammy arrived from Santiago and despite crossing a fair few time zones she wasn't too moody... We had a brilliant few days in Sydney, lounging on Bondi beach and walking from bondi over to Coogee beach. We also ate out a few times which was a real novelty for me in Australia (no more bloody pasta!) It is difficult to feel christmassy though with all the heat!
We then headed up to the Blue Mountains which are spectacular, even if the weather was a bit crap. We trekked out down into plenty of gorges and their own Grand Canyon which gives its American namesake a good run for its money. We did get attacked by leeches after coming back from a wet hike, I spent a good twenty minutes outside burning them off our shoes and clothes with a lighter. How manly... Eventually the mist cleared and we got perfect views of the Three Sisters, the rock formations which the Blue Mountains are famous for. One of teh best things I've seen on my entire trip...
One uncomfortable night bus later, we were in melbourne and I actually preferred the city to Sydney. It's much more laid back. We met up with the couple, Robbie and Emily, who I stalked across SE Asia who fed us with a monster bbq in their swanky new flat. And the highlight of Melbourne was undoubtedly Neighbours Night where we got to meet the legend that is Dr Karl Kennedy. Life doesn't get much better than that... Our final night together in Australia, a possum broke into our room and wreaked havoc at 5 am. We were running around our room after it, whilst it pooed, peed and refused to leave by the window it came in through. Eventually we chased it through the hostel, asfter cornering the cat so it didn't rip the bloody possum to pieces. I hate possums... Funnily enough in Australia they're protected species, but here in NZ they're hated and everyone shoots them and runs them over. I agree with teh Kiwis...
News from NZ coming soon...
Cheers, Jonny
