Training for the Cape Argus Cycle Tour
Peter has only two weeks left for final training for the "Event of the Year" (see http://www.cycletour.co.za/ ) which takes place on the 8th March 2009. Recent rides to prepare for cycling round mountains in over 30 degrees Centigrade include:
The coldest ride ever. Up Stowting Hill to Stelling Minnis, doubling back through Bodsham and Hastingleigh to meet John in Wye for a visit to the New Flying Horse. Following a swift half or three, we returned to John's house and ennjoyed an excellent lunch with Dydiane. The success of this can be gauged by the fact that lights were needed for the homeward trip. The temperature never rose above freezing point and the weather forecast was for minus five degrees! 32 miles.
The wetest ride ever. Up Stowting Hill then through Elmstead and many flooded roads and in torrential rain to Hastingleigh Church, up the North side of South Hill (what a killer!) then back home via Brabourne. Only 20 miles but it was one of the hardest rides ever.
The fastest ride ever. 40 miles to Canterbury and back, via Hastingleigh, Waltham and Petham and returning via Patrixbourne, Bridge, Bishopsbourne, Stelling Minnis and Stowting. there's lots of climbing and the time, 3 hours and 51 minutes was a personal best (thanks to the new Mavic wheels).
